  • Study Conditions for students of the Department of Computer Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Merseburg (Germany)

Admission to Hochschule Merseburg takes place after the completion of the first year of study at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. The language of instruction is German.

Every May, a representative from the Merseburg University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Merseburg) visits Kyiv to conduct German language proficiency testing for students. The test consists of three sections: grammar, reading, and speaking (an interview).

Students who successfully pass the testing receive an official letter of admission from Hochschule Merseburg, which they then submit to the German Embassy in Ukraine to apply for a visa.

The Bachelor’s program lasts 6 semesters, which is 3 years. Since some subjects overlap with the curriculum of the first two years at Igor Sikorsky KPI, it is possible to transfer certain grades (such as Mathematics and Physics) and complete the study program in two years instead of three. This allows students to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree from both universities simultaneously.

After receiving a bachelor’s degree at Hochschule Merseburg, students can continue their education at a master’s degree at Hochschule Merseburg or any university in Germany.

Detailed study plans for the three proposed specializations can be found on the website:
Applied Computer Science (BAIN) Electronics / Information Technology (BEI) Technical Management of Systems and E-Learning (BTREL)

Students may be enrolled in the following Bachelor’s programs:

  • Communications and Automation Systems (BMKAS)
  • Applied Computer Science (BAIN)
  • Technical Documentation and E-Learning Systems (BTREL)

When enrolling in the BTREL program, students typically choose a concentration in E-Learning Systems after the second semester. This is due to the fact that advanced study of technical documentation requires a near-native level of German proficiency.

Ukrainian students complete their first and second semesters of the Bachelor’s program in Engineering at KPI while simultaneously attending German language courses, which last for two semesters. Attendance of these German courses is mandatory.

During the first two semesters of the BMKAS, BAIN, and BTREL programs, Ukrainian students do not take Mathematics or Computer Science courses, as these fundamental subjects are covered during their first year at Igor Sikorsky KPI. Additionally, students attend German language courses at Hochschule Merseburg (HoMe), consisting of 8 academic hours per week. From the third to the fifth semesters, students may also choose “German Language” classes as part of their non-technical electives. Further details are governed by the academic and examination regulations (Studien- und Prüfungsordnung) of the BMKAS, BAIN, and BTREL specializations.

A basic knowledge of English is a mandatory requirement. The curriculum at Hochschule Merseburg (HOME) includes specialized English language courses tailored to each major.

After successful completion of the 1st and 2nd semesters and successful attendance of German language courses, the “Language Center” of HOME Merseburg conducts a German language exam at KPI. Passing the exam is a mandatory condition for admission to HOME Merseburg. In accordance with the agreed number of Ukrainian students, the best graduates of the language courses will be selected for approval to study at HOME Merseburg.

The Bachelor’s degree programs in BMKAS, BAIN, and BTREL last for 6 semesters. Since Ukrainian students have already completed two semesters at KPI, the total duration of study is 8 semesters, which corresponds to the standard length of a Bachelor’s degree program at the National Technical University of Ukraine.

Students who do not obtain a visa or fail to earn the required number of credits at Hochschule Merseburg have the opportunity to complete their studies at KPI.

To graduate from Hochschule Merseburg (HOME), students must approve a Bachelor’s thesis topic that has been previously coordinated with the respective professors from both HoMe and Igor Sikorsky KPI. The thesis is supervised by an assigned professor from the relevant department.

The Bachelor’s thesis is presented in either German or English at Hochschule Merseburg (HOME) and is evaluated in accordance with HOME’s examination regulations. Once the thesis is accepted by Hochschule Merseburg, students translate it into Ukrainian, and either the translation or the original English version is submitted to Igor Sikorsky KPI. The National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” recognizes and approves this work as a Bachelor’s thesis in the student’s respective specialization.

After successfully passing all exams, the student receives a bachelor’s degree from HOME Merseburg and KPI. The student receives a certificate from KPI and HOME Merseburg, as well as a joint certificate from both universities. The certificate is accompanied by an extract with detailed academic performance (Diploma Supplement). All of the above documents are issued in German, Ukrainian and English.
