The initiative to organize the training of specialists in this new specialty belonged to the senior lecturer of the Department of Automation and Telemechanics, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Kostiantyn Hryhorovych Samofalov. He summarized the experience of the country’s leading higher education institutions (MEI, LETI, MVTU, MEPhI) in establishing the educational process for computer engineering and directly supervised the formation of the new specialty at KPI. Extensive methodological and organizational work was carried out (curriculum, course programs, creation of laboratories, material base, etc.).

The first graduating class of specialists in 1961, groups SM-1, SM-2: sitting in the first row: Kniazhskyi V., Yenenko V., Rubanyk O., Romanenko S., Budniak A.; in the second row: Kosmach Yu., Semka V., Bania E., Saprykin V.I., Wei In Tsiuan, Samofalov K.H., Khyzhynskyi B.P., Tykhonov V.O., Yan Sy Dzhen, Hryhorchuk A., Melnyk S., Barsuk Ya.; in the third row: Romankevych O., Liu Yun Lyn, Buzovskyi O., Bielkina L., Kysilevskyi F., Blazhko S., Lapa V., Lytvynov O., Zubkovska V., Medvediev A., Seredniak O.; in the fourth row: Ven Dziu Dzi, Smelkov V., Vintsiuk T., Chaikovskyi R., Shuvaieva V., Holyshkina N., Tomashov V., Semeniuk S., Luhovoi O.; in the fifth row: Morozov A., Van Tsi, Selihei O., Tetelbaum I., Trochun T., Dzhan Si Dzhen, Riazanova L., Zaitsev V., Hrundman S., Tymoshenko A., Siryk V., Sivachenko P., Morozov V., Beziuk V. Out of the first graduating class, 30 scientists defended their dissertations, including 13 doctoral ones.

Special attention was paid to personnel selection. The first lecturers of the specialized courses were K. H. Samofalov, V. T. Kulyk, H. V. Liubchenko, H. M. Mykhailov, B. P. Khyzhynskyi, and M. M. Pynevych. The educational process was supported by engineers N. V. Skorobohatko, V. I. Saprykin, N. I. Pylypenko, and V. A. Tykhonov.

In March 1960, a new Department of Computer Engineering (CE), the first in Ukraine, was officially established at KPI (KPI Order No. 148 of March 16, 1960). By the same order, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor K. H. Samofalov was appointed acting head of the department. In September 1960, K. H. Samofalov was elected head of the CE Department through a competitive selection process.

In September 1961, the first graduation of electrical engineers specialized in “Mathematical and Computing Devices and Systems” took place (two academic groups, SM-1 and SM-2, totaling 60 engineers). Among the graduates, O. V. Buzovskyi, F. N. Kysylevskyi, E. N. Bania, Yu. S. Kanevskyi, and A. H. Tymoshenko remained to work at the department. The department’s laboratories were equipped with state-of-the-art technology—analog computers and unique digital components from the “MESM” computer.

1962 By order of the Ministry of Higher and Specialized Secondary Education of the Ukrainian SSR, a computing research laboratory with a targeted staff of 8 people was established at the KPI Department of Computer Engineering. The Head of the Department, Associate Professor K. H. Samofalov, was appointed as the scientific supervisor of the laboratory.

Starting from the 1962/1963 academic year, all pedagogical and scientific work was performed by full-time staff, whose number grew from 50 in 1963 to 126 people in 1967, and the number of specialized courses increased to 11 (lectures were delivered by Samofalov K. H., Pynevych M. M., Saprykin V. I., Shyrochyn V. P., Riaboshtanko R. F., Buzovskyi O. V., Korniichuk V. I., and Selivanov V. L.).

Structural changes at the department throughout the entire period of development, from 1962 to 1991, can be illustrated by the following data.

1969 The Computing Laboratory was separated from the Department of Computer Engineering into a structural unit of the Faculty of Automation and Electrical Instrument Engineering. Candidate of Technical Sciences F. M. Kysylevskyi was appointed head of the laboratory. The scientific supervisor was the head of the CE Department, Associate Professor K. H. Samofalov.

1969 Student enrollment was increased to 3 groups, and the Department of Computer Engineering began training engineer-mathematicians in specialty 0647 — Applied Mathematics. The department’s staff was also expanded.

1972 The faculty’s Computing Laboratory was granted university-wide status and began to be equipped with new computers, including the ES-1050, ES-1033, ES-1032, and others.

1973 р. A new department—the Department of Applied Mathematics—was separated from the original department, with 3 professors, 2 associate professors, and 4 assistants transferring to it. Professor Ye. M. Vavilov was appointed head of the new department.

1976 р. A new department, the Department of CEIER (Computer Engineering in Education and Research), was separated from the department and became a university-wide unit. Prof. V. I. Kulia was appointed head of the department.

1979 р. The Department of Computer Engineering was renamed the Department of Computing Machines, Systems, and Networks.

1990 р. A new department—the Department of Specialized Computer Systems—was separated from the department. Prof. V. P. Tarasenko was appointed head of the department. The department became part of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics. 3 professors, 7 associate professors, and 4 assistants, as well as the full-time staff of 3 research laboratories, transferred to the new department.

Three Computer Engineering departments were established at the Chernihiv, Vinnytsia, and Cherkasy branches of KPI (which have now become independent institutes) based on the KPI Department of Computer Engineering.

Pedagogical School

Lecturers who worked at the department

50 years of the Department

At KPI, for the first time in Ukraine, the training of computer engineers commenced in September 1956 under the specialty “Mathematical and Computing Devices” (specialty code 0608).
