For the first time in Ukraine, the training of engineers at the KPI in computer science was started in September 1956 - the specialty was named "Mathematical and computational devices" (specialty code 0608). Initiative to organize a training in this new specialty emerged from the senior lecturer of automatics and telemechanics Ph.D. Samofalov Constantine Georgievich. He summarized the experience of the leading universities of the country (MEI, LETI, MVTU, MIFI) of setting the educational process, applied it to Computer Science, and personally managed the formation of a new specialty in the KPI. A large methodical and organizational work was performed (curriculum, course programs, the creation of laboratories, material resources, etc.).

The first graduates of 1961 year, a group of CM-1 CM-2. In the front row: Knyazhsky V., Enenko V., Rubanik A., Romanenko, S., A.      In March 1960, KPI formally institutionalized the new, the first in Ukraine, Department of Computer Science (CS) (order KPI 148 on March 16, 1960). The same order as acting head of department was appointed Ph.D. doc. Samofalov K.G. In September 1960 K.G. Samofalov was elected as the head of department of CS.

In September 1961 the first Electrical Engineers, specializing in “Math and counting devices and equipment “ (two training groups of CM-1 CM-2, 60 engineers) graduated. Of the graduates, who stayed to work at the department remained O.V. Buzovskii, F.N. Kisilevsky, E. Banya, S. Kanev, A. G. Timoshenko. Laboratories of the department had modern equipment - analog computers, and unique blocks of digital computers “MESM”.
In 1962 (Order 170 MB and MDA USSR on 28 March 1962) at the department was founded  a scientific computing lab, based on the computer “Minsk-1”, and afterwards “Razdan-2” (1967). Docent Samofalov K.G. was appointed as the supervisor of the laboratory.

Beginning with the 1962/1963 year, all teaching scientific work performed by staff members, whose numbers increased from 50 in 1963 to 126 in1967, and the number of special courses - up to 11 (lectures were Samofalov K.G., Pinevich M. M. , Saprikin V.I., Shyrochin V.P, Ryaboshtanko R. F., Buzovskii O.V., Korniychuk V. I., Selivanov V.L.).
Structural changes in the department for the entire period of development from 1962 to 1991, can be illustrated by the following data.

1962 year By the order of the GO and SSO USSR at the Department of Computer Science KPI was created a computer science lab with a target staff of 8 persons. Head of the department, docent Samofalov KG. was appointed as the director of the scientific laboratory.

1976 year Ffrom the staff of the department singled out new department - Department OTIER – it became intitute’s general department. Prof. Pulya VI. Was appointed as a head of the new department.

1979 year Computer Science Department renamed as Department of computing machines, systems and networks.

1990 year From the staff of the department singled out new department - Department of specialized computer systems. Head of the department professor Tarasenko V.P.

The department joined the faculty of applied mathematics. 3 professors, 7 docents and 4 assistants, as well as staff members of 3 science laboratories came to work at the department.

Three departments based on the Department of CS KPI were created in Chernigov, Vinnitsa and Cherkassy branches of KPI (now – institutes).
